Privileged Traders and Asset Market Efficiency: A Laboratory Study

چکیده

The 39 experiments reported here examine the impact on trading profits and on market performance of awarding special trading privileges to some traders and not others. In call market experiments, the last-mover and orderflow access privileges are both modestly prof? itable and neither impairs market performance. In continuous market experiments, quicker access to orderflow information is quite profitable and more detailed access is possibly prof? itable; both privileges seem to enhance market performance slightly. By contrast, privileged marketmaking is extremely profitable and greatly impairs market performance.

The Effect of Sequential Information Arrival on Asset Prices: An Experimental Study

A complete understanding of security markets requires a simultaneous explanation of price behavior, trading volume, portfolio composition (ie., asset allocation), and bid-ask spreads. In this paper, these variables are observed in a controlled setting-a computerized double auction market, similar to NASDAQ. Our laboratory allows experimental control of information arrival-whether simultaneously...

The Opportunity for Conspiracy in Asset Markets Organized with Dealer Intermediaries

This article reports an asset market experiment in which asymmetrically informed traders transact through competing dealers. Dealers face a classic adverse selection problem, because some traders have private information regarding the asset value while other traders are uninformed. When dealers cannot communicate outside the market, they price the asset competitively and the market is generally...

Evolution, efficiency and noise traders in a one-sided auction market ¬リニ

Natural selection is used to examine a one-sided buyer auction market. With each trader’s behavior preprogrammed with its own inherent and fixed probabilities of overpredicting, predicting correctly and underpredicting the fundamental value of the asset, informational efficiency occurs. If each buyer’s initial wealth is sufficiently small relative to the market supply and if the variation in th...

Asset Price Bubbles and Crashes with Near-Zero-Intelligence Traders

We examine whether a simple agent—based model can generate asset price bubbles and crashes of the type observed in a series of laboratory asset market experiments beginning with the work of Smith, Suchanek and Williams (1988). We follow the methodology of Gode and Sunder (1993, 1997) and examine the outcomes that obtain when populations of zero—intelligence (ZI) budget constrained, artiÞcial ag...

Asymmetric Information and Survival in Financial Markets

In the evolutionary setting for a …nancial market developed by Blume and Easley (1992), we consider an in…nitely repeated version of a model à la Grossman and Stiglitz (1980) with asymmetrically informed traders. Informed traders observe the realisation of a payo¤ relevant signal before making their portfolio decisions. Uninformed traders do not have direct access to this kind of information, b...
